FAQ
Q: When is the best time to plant trees?
A: Spring or Fall, but anytime trees are dormant and the ground is not frozen. In Ohio there are about 5 months where trees are dormant. I usually prefer Fall because of the comfortable temperatures and dryer ground.
Q: How do I know which type of tree to plant and what soil is optimal?
A: Refer to TREES on the website for the best type of tree for your property
Q: How can I keep deer and rabbits from destroying my trees?
A: While there are many remedies and products that deter deer and rabbit damage, the only thing that I have found that works is putting fence around the trees especially during rut season. I use welded wire fencing since it's less expensive and easy to use. You need at least 4' of fence height
Q: Do I need to water my newly planted trees?
A: Newly planted trees should be watered if rain is not in the forecast. You should mulch for moisture retention and only water again if drought conditions arise. No watering is necessary after the first year although watering will certainly boost growth rates especially with tree fertilizer.
Q: Do I need to trim my evergreens?
A: In order to achieve a nicer pyramidal shape with evergreens they will need trimmed. This is done in June (after the new growth in May). This link is a good video on how to do that (video shows Blue Spruce, but method can be used for other pines): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRzes560OME
